Top 5 Techniques for Learning Lines

tips for learning lines

Learning lines can be tricky at times, but with plenty of patience and the right techniques, it is definitely something that we are all capable of mastering. So with Spring shows across Britain now well into rehearsals and with the new term underway at Jigsaw Arts, here at Head Office, we put our heads together and came up with our favourite techniques!

From late night poring over the script to train-time testing, they’re all here! Which is the most efficient method? You decide!

In no particular order, here are the Jigsaw team’s tried and tested line-learning techniques:

5. Record Them

“Record your lines on your phone voice recorder and play it back to yourself.  Apparently if you leave it on when you are asleep it sinks in quicker!?”

4. Go Over Your Lines On The Train

“Read through a couple of times before bed or whilst travelling. Travelling was a good one for me as I did it on the tube between rehearsals or jobs.”

3. Muscle Memory

“Evenings are a good time for learning lines – the mind stays active overnight, so you’ll be surprised how much has stuck by the morning. But ‘muscle memory’ is also amazing – don’t underestimate how much you will naturally learn whilst getting it up on its feet in the rehearsal room!”

2. Annotate Your Script

“Plenty of notes and annotations. The more you actively engage with the text, the easier they are to learn.”

1. Repetition

“Again and again and again!”

Which is your favourite technique? Or perhaps you have one of your own? Let us know on Twitter or Facebook, we’d love to hear from you and find out what you do to really get those lines to stick.

In the mean-time, have a fantastic week and good luck with those lines!
