These children attend a 90-minute session divided into three sections of dance, drama and singing. There is a short break in the session. All teachers are specially trained by Jigsaw Arts to work with these age groups. The sessions are designed to develop the children’s confidence, focus and social skills from an early age, giving them a head start in life. It also provides a great introduction to performing arts for students wishing to take part in our more advanced course from 7 years upwards. To ensure each child gets personal attention there is a maximum of 16 students per class.
Drama: Children are introduced to basic stagecraft – through drama, stories, plays and poetry. This encourages self-expression and stimulates the imagination, while developing focus.
Dance: Our dance activities are designed to improve children’s posture, co-ordination and spatial awareness. Through fun and funky routines, children develop a basic dance vocabulary.
Singing: An introduction to basic vocal exercises and rhythm is provided to children, through their enjoyment of singing along to a selection of musical theatre and pop tunes.
Students attend a three-hour session comprising an hour of drama, an hour of singing and an hour of dance, each with a specialist coach. Jigsaw Arts provides training in all three disciplines in order to create a well-rounded performer. To establish an environment that builds confidence, regardless of individual ability, students are divided into appropriate age bands. All students will be challenged to their full potential. The three age groups rotate between the three disciplines.
There is a maximum of 18 students per class.
Drama: Students are given a practical understanding of stagecraft, as well as developing improvisation, voice and acting techniques. In addition, they will be encouraged to find the truth in their acting, enabling them to deliver more believable performances. Working in teams to develop social skills, via scripts and poetry, also improves confidence.
Dance: Students learn a jazz dance technique – the basis for all popular dance. Our aim is to improve each student’s core stability, flexibility, co-ordination, posture and dance vocabulary. Jazz, street dance and musical theatre all feature in the variety of styles which students will perform.
Singing: Vocal training is utilised to develop each individual’s voice to its fullest potential. Students work on breathing, rhythm, projection, pitch and musical interpretation, to improve confidence and range. A wide variety of musical genres are enjoyed, including modern, pop and musical theatre.
Each school has its own manager who is a key member of the Jigsaw Arts team. The manager coordinates teachers, students and parents to ensure we have a safe, professional and smooth-running school.
Jigsaw Arts managers have a teaching and/or a performing background. In addition to their individual experience, all managers are trained by Jigsaw Arts director Nicola Lander to provide each school with a first-class consistent service. In larger schools an assistant is also provided.
The students are coached by fully trained tutors who are well organised, energetic and passionate about teaching.
Jigsaw Arts takes every care when selecting new teachers for its schools. They all have experience in teaching or a formal qualification, with many still working professionally in the performing arts industry. All teachers have a CRB check and attend Jigsaw Arts teacher training sessions to provide consistent tutoring across our schools.
All schools are regularly inspected by Jigsaw Performing Arts management, to ensure that the quality of teaching is consistent.
Jigsaw Arts requires all students to behave in a disciplined and professional manner. Students are expected to be punctual and committed to the course to achieve their full potential.
Students who have the desire to succeed in the performing arts industry need to learn the importance of self-discipline and hard work. Jigsaw Arts will remove from classes any student whose behaviour is deemed inappropriate, disrespectful or disruptive to other students and teachers.
Andy has worked for Jigsaw since 2001 and is currently Jigsaw Arts Development Manager and the co-founder of Jigsaw Jumpers. He has a BA (Hons) in Theatre from the Guildford School of Acting. Andrew has a wide variety of teaching experience with all ages groups. Prior to all this Andy worked extensively as an actor in the both the West End and regional theatres.
Shannen trained at the Italia Conti Arts Centre for 3 Years and at DNA Studios for 1 year. She has just completed 1 Year as the Dance Captain at a Warner Leisure Hotel on the Isle of Wight. Shannen has 6 years experience teaching all ages, from babies to adults and has completed her P.C.E, D.D.I and D.D.E teaching qualifications. Shannen is delighted to be joining the Jigsaw Arts family again.
Performing Arts Teacher
Taylor is currently studying performing arts at DNA Studios. Throughout her school life Taylor has been teaching a variety of dance styles and age groups. She has also choreographed for many shows including assisting choreography for a show at Her Majesty's theatre in London. After successful auditions, Taylor has performed in 5 professional pantomimes as a chorus dancer. Taylor has also performed at prestigious London venues including both the Royal Albert Hall and Her Majesty's theatre.
She believes that performing arts is a great way to bring out children's confidence and is also a great way to improve a child's social skills. She is thrilled to be working as part of the jigsaw team and cannot wait to share her experiences in both choreographing and performing with the children.
Kathryn hails from Northern Ireland and is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's Musical Theatre programme. Kathryn is thrilled to be a part of the Jigsaw team.
Katie trained at Paul McCartney's LIPA in Acting and went on to train at The Liverpool Theatre School in Musical Theatre where she graduated as Head Girl in 2011.
Following this she toured in one musical and two plays in Germany before moving to London where she has been involved in several theatre projects.
Katie currently teaches the 'LAMDA' syllabus at 'London Fields Primary' and works in Jigsaw head office running the agency 'Jigsaw Arts Management'. She is the manager of Jigsaw Ware and teaches Performing Arts at Jigsaw Finchley. Katie is very excited to bring Jigsaw to Watford!
Performing Arts Teacher
Rachel trained in Manchester at the Arden School of Theatre before moving to London to study Musical Theatre at the London College of Music. After graduating, Rachel was involved in a variety of productions both here and over in Italy. She then went on to complete a UK tour playing the role of 'Wendy' in Peter Pan. Rachel has a great passion for teaching and has experience working with children of all ages. She thoroughly enjoys being part of the Jigsaw team.
Students are awarded certificates at the end of every year that they attend. We are rewarding commitment and effort rather than ability as we feel every student has personal objectives within the course. Students who reach 3 years or more are then awarded medals every year.
During our technique term, students concentrate on building and improving their skills, exploring many areas of the performing arts. During this term, parents will be given a written report on their child’s progress. The school manager is also available for ongoing verbal feedback.
Jigsaw Arts run three terms per year. Twice a year family and friends will be invited to watch a presentation or show combining dance, drama and singing. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to put their performance skills into practice.
Jigsaw Arts devises performances so that all students are included. Each student will be individually challenged as well as being encouraged to work as part of a team.
Jigsaw Arts promotes a disciplined approach to the performing arts and students are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate for movement and dance.
Jigsaw Arts has a supply of affordable clothing complete with the Jigsaw logo: alternatively black clothing must be worn. Jazz shoes are the most suitable form of footwear and can be ordered from Jigsaw Arts or any reputable dance shop.
All students (7-18 years) receive a free Jigsaw Arts folder for their scripts and song sheets. The students are encouraged to bring these every week.
