Catch Jigsaw Youth Theatre in action!

The Accordion Shop, Jigsaw Youth Theatre

Jigsaw Youth Theatre Company is an extension of the weekend schools, catering for 16-20 year olds with a keen interest in further developing their skills within the Performing Arts. The Youth Theatre gives young aspiring actors the opportunity to work in a more intense environment, giving them a real taste of what training is like in Professional drama schools for those that wish to pursue this path when they reach 18. Read on to find out about the group and the upcoming production of ‘The Accordion Shop’.

The company meets one evening a week for workshops with Kate Cohen who has been teaching for 12 years and has worked for Jigsaw since 2004 as a teacher and manager, as well as leading teacher training. Kate graduated with a 1st class BA Hons in Performing Arts (Acting) from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and as an actor herself she has worked with companies such as Creation, New Perspectives and the New Vic (Stoke).

The students get to experience a taste of the professional theatre world by putting on productions in professional theatre spaces. In July 2013 the students of the Jigsaw Youth Theatre had a once in a lifetime opportunity to perform on the Olivier stage at “The National Theatre” as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival. They were lucky enough to work closely with playwright Jim Cartwright on his new play “The Mobile Phone Show”. Over the past 20 years the National Theatre has commissioned and published more than 140 plays for ‘Connections’. This opportunity gives young people aged 13-19 the access to the very best new writing for theatre.
