Spotlight on Jigsaw student of 12 years… Rachel!

Jigsaw Performing Arts Rachel student of 12 years

Rachel started Jigsaw when she was 6 years old and found herself hooked from the very start! She is now 18 and has progressed from being a Jigsaw student to being a part of the Jigsaw Youth Theatre and she now assists our 3-4’s class in Bexleyheath. Rachel first started Jigsaw because her Mum knew her hyper energy and imagination needed to be channeled and Jigsaw seemed like the perfect option for this! Here is our interview with Rachel to find out more about her Jigsaw Journey….

Where are you from? What school do you go to?

I’m from Dartford and I have been going to the Bexleyheath school.

What’s your favourite subject at Jigsaw?

My favourite subject at Jigsaw changes all the time depending on what we’re doing in each one. Although a lot of the time singing has been my favourite subject, I loved learning how to do harmonies when I moved up to Group 3 and advancing in music!

What’s the best thing about Jigsaw?

The best thing about Jigsaw is the inspiring teachers I’ve had over the years. They really know the industry inside out and make every lesson enjoyable for the students. I love being able to create a bond with the teachers and learn more about performing from them. I love that Jigsaw provides me with quality teaching from professionals, who genuinely care about us, something that really sets it apart from other stage schools.

What’s your favourite show that you’ve been in at Jigsaw?

My favourite show has to be my last ever Jigsaw show last December! I can’t exactly remember the name but it was pretty much ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and I got to play Glinda opposite my best friend Chloe and we sang ‘What is This Feeling’ from Wicked. It was the best song to perform and so amazing to be able to sing a duet with Chloe so thank you Sherene for picking such a great song!

What do you feel you’ve gained from being at Jigsaw?

Being at Jigsaw has improved my confidence, performance skills, team work skills, communication and most of all the best 12 years ever!

Have you had a favourite teacher at Jigsaw?

Kate is definitely my favourite. She taught me drama and then became the manager of the school and is an incredible teacher/director and has been great with me over the years. She has taught me and every single student how to be a great performer and I carry all of her weird and wacky sayings/warm up techniques around with me. Oh wait, I must mention Andy! Andy taught me everything I know! (I hope he reads that!).

What’s your ambition for the future?

I hope to become a professional actress and make a living doing what I love! Jigsaw sparked this determination in me and I hope to accomplish this!

Who inspires you?

My Mum inspires me, she’s very strong and determined to succeed in everything she does which inspires me to do the same.

What has been your favourite moment at Jigsaw?

My favourite moment at Jigsaw was definitely when I performed at the Soho Theatre with Jigsaw’s Youth Theatre. It was such a great experience to work in a professional venue with such talented people.

Who is your favourite actor/actress? Why?

I love Benedict Cumberbatch and Meryl Streep. They both create such iconic characters and are so versatile. Not to mention the amazing work they have done over the years that has inspired me!

Do you have a favourite song?

I love ‘The Wizard and I’ from Wicked. Although its extremely hard to sing well!

If you had a film of your life who would play you?

I’d say Jenna Coleman because apparently she looks like me although I don’t see it! In a dream world, Sandra Bullock would play me because I adore her!

Anything else you think we should know about you?

I am currently working Front of House at The Prince Edward Theatre which means I get to watch Miss Saigon every night and it’s great! Musicals are my favourite!
