For parents, finding an activity that supports their child’s wellbeing, confidence and development can be just as important as finding something they enjoy.

Performing arts classes offer a wonderful opportunity for older children and teenagers to express themselves, make friends and develop valuable skills in a supportive environment. At Jigsaw Walthamstow, our classes are about much more than performing on stage. They are about helping every child discover what they can do, progress at their own pace and feel that they belong.

Here are some of the benefits that performing arts classes can offer older children.

1. Building confidence in a supportive environment

Confidence does not always look the same in every child.

For some, it might mean volunteering to perform in front of a group. For others, it could mean speaking up in a discussion, trying something new or feeling comfortable being themselves around new people.

Performing arts classes give children regular opportunities to step outside their comfort zone in a gentle and structured way. They can experiment, make mistakes, try again and learn that progress does not have to mean getting everything right first time.

At Jigsaw, children are encouraged to take part without feeling that they have to be the loudest, most outgoing or most experienced person in the room. Our aim is to create a safe and welcoming environment where children can grow in confidence naturally.

These small steps can have a positive impact far beyond the classroom.

2. Developing communication skills

Communication is an important part of everyday life, from working with classmates and making friends to presenting ideas at school and preparing for future opportunities.

Performing arts classes help children practise communicating in a variety of ways. Through drama, they may explore characters, emotions and different points of view. Singing encourages them to use their voice, while movement helps them become more aware of expression and body language.

Children also learn how to listen, respond and work with others. These are useful skills that can support them in school, friendships and many different situations as they get older.

Performing arts provide a practical and creative way to build these skills, without making them feel like another academic lesson.

3. Encouraging creativity and self-expression

Older children can sometimes feel pressure to fit in or behave in a particular way. Having a space where they can explore ideas and express themselves creatively can be incredibly valuable.

Performing arts allow children to explore stories, emotions, characters, music and movement. They can use their imagination, experiment with different ideas and discover new ways to communicate what they think and feel.

There is no single right way to be creative. Some children may love taking centre stage, while others may enjoy developing a character, contributing ideas to a group or supporting a performance behind the scenes.

At Jigsaw Walthamstow, we celebrate every child’s individual strengths and encourage them to find their own path.

4. Making new friends and feeling a sense of belonging

Friendships become increasingly important as children grow older. Finding a group where they feel accepted and comfortable can make a real difference to their happiness and wellbeing.

Performing arts classes are naturally collaborative. Children work together on scenes, songs, choreography and performances. They learn to listen to one another, share ideas, solve problems and celebrate each other’s progress.

Over time, this can help create a strong sense of community. Children are able to meet others who share their interests and build friendships through a shared experience.

For some children, a weekly performing arts class becomes much more than an activity. It becomes a place to belong.

5. Strengthening teamwork and cooperation

Although performing can sometimes appear to be an individual activity, many aspects of the performing arts rely on teamwork.

A successful group performance requires children to understand their role, pay attention to others and work towards a shared goal. They learn that every contribution matters, whether they are delivering a line, singing in an ensemble, learning choreography or helping another member of the group.

These experiences encourage cooperation, patience and responsibility. They also help children understand how to contribute positively to a team, even when they have different personalities, ideas or abilities.

These are skills that can support children throughout their education and into adult life.

6. Developing resilience and learning to manage mistakes

Performing arts classes can teach children that mistakes are a normal and valuable part of learning.

A line might be forgotten. A movement might need practising again. A scene might not work as expected the first time. Rather than seeing these moments as failures, children can learn how to adapt, try again and keep going.

This helps develop resilience and a healthier attitude towards challenges. Children begin to understand that progress often comes through practice and that they do not need to be perfect to succeed.

For older children, this can be an important message at a time when academic, social and personal pressures may be increasing.

7. Supporting emotional wellbeing

Having a regular activity to look forward to can provide structure and balance during a busy school week.

Performing arts give children a chance to focus on something creative, active and social. They can step away from screens, schoolwork and everyday pressures while spending time with others in a positive environment.

Drama, singing and movement can also give children different ways to explore emotions and experiences. They may gain a better understanding of how others feel, while becoming more comfortable expressing themselves.

At Jigsaw, we want children to leave classes feeling positive, supported and proud of what they have achieved.

8. Encouraging independence and personal growth

As children become older, they naturally begin to develop their own interests, opinions and sense of identity.

Performing arts classes can support this process by giving them opportunities to make choices, take responsibility and become more independent. They may help shape a scene, make creative decisions, learn lines, practise choreography or prepare for a performance.

With encouragement from experienced teachers, children can learn to trust themselves and recognise their own progress.

The result is not simply a stronger performer. It is a child who is developing the confidence and skills to navigate different situations in life.

A place to grow, not a place to compete

One of the most important things about a performing arts class is the environment in which children learn.

Older children do not need to feel that they are being compared with everyone else or that they have to arrive with previous experience. They need the chance to explore, learn and develop in a way that feels positive and manageable.

At Jigsaw Walthamstow, our approach is child-centred and encouraging. We believe every child should have the opportunity to take part, whether they dream of performing on stage or simply want to make friends, build confidence and try something new.

Our classes support progression without unnecessary pressure. Children are encouraged to celebrate their own achievements and recognise that everyone’s journey is different.
